End of Native Son

So after reading this book, it amazes me how a character with no integrity can have such a lasting influence on me when i can't relate to him. Bigger is probably the worst antagonist I've ever had to read about. Aren't we supposed to understand the rationale of his behavior and sympathize? i guess the book's deeper purpose was lost on me. If he had the personality, intelligence and integrity of Ghandi or King, i might have had some sympathy for him during his trial. However, since he bashed Bessie's face in and let her freeze to death in an air vent in the middle of winter, i could not feel sorry for him.

He has influenced me by showing me the type of ignorance and ignorant people i have to avoid.

  1. Do you think Wright is advocating avoidance? Or is he saying we cannot simply ignore what society produces and how we are all implicated? You don't necessarily need to sympathize with a protagonist, but I think you do need to try to understand him and how he came to be.
